What is Prometrium?

Endometrial hyperplasia is the thickening of the lining of the uterus that carries a risk of becoming cancerous. Prometrium is also used to restore normal menstruation in women who have stopped having periods although they are not pregnant or going through menopause. Prometrium is not meant to be used by children.

Do not use Prometrium if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. Prometrium should not be used to prevent heart disease or dementia. Studies have shown this medication may increase the risk of strokes, heart attacks, blood clots, and breast cancer. If you are pregnant, have unusual vaginal bleeding, a history of breast cancer, liver disease, or if you have recently had a heart attack, stroke, or blood clot, you should not use Prometrium.

Before using Prometrium, check with your doctor to ensure it is safe for you to use. If you have heart disease, migraines, asthma, seizures, or epilepsy, you need to tell your doctor. You also need to tell your doctor about all the medications you are using including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Provide your doctor with a full medical history to reduce your risk of drug interactions and adverse effects.

Only use Prometrium as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Prometrium is taken as an oral tablet once a day at bedtime, or as directed by your doctor. Follow the dosing schedule carefully and ask your doctor if you have any questions. The dosage will be determined based on your medical condition and response to therapy.

What are the side effects of Prometrium?

Common side effects of Prometrium include fatigue, dizziness, headache, mood changes, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, hot flashes, and vaginal discharge. Consult a healthcare provider if side effects occur, persist, or worsen.

If you have unusual vaginal bleeding, pain or burning when you urinate, a lump in your breast, sudden vision problems, severe headache, severe dizziness, or drowsiness, call your doctor right away. Serious adverse effects of Prometrium include heart attack, stroke, blood clots, and vision loss.

This is not a complete list of the possible side effects of Prometrium and more can occur. Ask your doctor about all the risks associated with using Prometrium to ensure it is right for you. You may also report side effects to the FDA. Talk to your doctor for additional information, medical advice, side effects, drug interactions, warnings, and precautions before starting treatment with Prometrium.
