What is Progesterone?

Oftentimes, Progesterone is used by women to help restart menstrual periods that unexpectedly stopped, treat abnormal uterine bleeding associated with hormonal imbalance, and treat severe symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Progesterone is also used together with the hormone estrogen for hormone replacement therapy. Lab-made Progesterone works by imitating the functions of the Progesterone that is naturally released by the ovaries in a woman's body.

You should not use Progesterone to prevent conditions such as heart disease or dementia, as this drug may, in fact, increase your risk of developing these conditions. Progesterone should not be taken if you are pregnant, have abnormal vaginal bleeding, a history of breast cancer, liver disease, or have recently had a heart attack, stroke, or blood clot.

Progesterone comes in the form of capsules, injections, and vaginal creams and gels.

What are the side effects of Progesterone?

The most common side effects associated with Progesterone use include depression, dizziness, tenderness of the breasts, muscle or joint pain, white or brownish vaginal discharge, a sense of worry, abdominal cramping, and headache.
