The ingredient in the Rasuvo injection is called methotrexate. There is not currently a generic for Rasuvo, but methotrexate is available in tablet form. Oral methotrexate is primarily prescribed as chemotherapy for patients with certain types of cancer: leukemia and lymphoma. In this capacity, methotrexate works by killing cancer cells. Oral methotrexate is also sometimes prescribed for rheumatoid arthritis or severe psoriasis.
The good news is that generic methotrexate is covered by all Medicare prescription drug insurance programs and generally has a low copay when used with other health insurance plans. Consult with your physician about the pros and cons of using oral generic methotrexate in place of injectable Rasuvo.
Rasuvo (methotrexate) is a prescription drug prescribed to patients with rheumatoid arthritis or juvenile rheumatoid arthritis when other treatments have failed. It is also prescribed for patients with severe psoriasis, a disease that causes the skin to develop dry, hard, itchy patches in some places.
Rasuvo comes in the form of an auto-injector, which the patient uses to inject Rasuvo into the abdomen or thigh once per week. Patients generally report symptom relief in three to twelve weeks.
Rasuvo should not be taken as a cancer treatment. Rasuvo should not be used in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Rasuvo is not right for everyone. Before taking Rasuvo, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions and all of the medicines you take. This will help your doctor decide if Rasuvo is safe for you.
Common side effects of Rasuvo include, but are not limited to, nausea, stomach pain, indigestion, mouth sores, and rash.
Methotrexate, the active ingredient in Rasuvo, kills cells in the body. In larger doses than Rasuvo, it can damage organs and reduce blood cell counts. Your blood should be tested regularly when you are taking Rasuvo. Patients using Rasuvo are also at a higher risk of certain cancers, such as non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
Severe side effects of Rasuvo depend on the dosage, but you should consult your doctor if you have diarrhea, black and tarry stools, or bloody vomiting. Tell your doctor if you have cough, shortness of breath, stomach pain, dark urine, numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, confusion, seizures, or a skin rash with blistering and peeling. Allergic reactions are rare, but if you have symptoms of hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling around the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical help right away.
Rasuvo may also reduce fertility, and can cause lower sperm counts in men and disruption of the menstrual cycle in women.
Rasuvo also suppresses the body's immune system, so patients are more susceptible to infections and certain cancers.
Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects or drug interactions.
