Glyxambi is an FDA-approved diabetes medication that is used along with diet and exercise to control blood sugar in patients with Type 2 diabetes. It comes in the form of an oral tablet with two active ingredients: empagliflozin and linagliptin. Empagliflozin is an SGLT2 inhibitor that helps the kidneys get rid of excess glucose in the urine. Linagliptin is a DPP-4 inhibitor that increases substances in the body that make the pancreas release more insulin, which controls blood sugar levels. It also decreases sugar production by the liver.
Glyxambi may lower the risk of death from heart attacks, strokes, and heart failure in patients who have Type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
Note: Glyxambi should not be used to treat Type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
While taking Glyxambi, if you are sick with vomiting or diarrhea, or if you are eating or drinking less than usual, notify your doctor.
Follow your doctor’s instructions for testing blood sugar at home and getting bloodwork at the lab.
Glyxambi is available as 25-5 mg or 10-5 mg tablets. It is recommended to take Glyxambi every day in the morning, with or without food. Your healthcare provider may recommend other antidiabetic medications to be taken along with Glyxambi.
After taking Glyxambi, you may experience side effects such as urinary tract infections, sore throat, upper respiratory tract infections, or diarrhea.
Serious side effects may include low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), kidney problems, or severe joint pain. Glyxambi can also cause serious infections around the genitals. Get medical help immediately if you experience burning, itching, odor, discharge, pain, tenderness, swelling, or redness around the genitals or rectum, or if you have a fever.
Stop taking Glyxambi and call your doctor right away if you have severe stomach pain (which may spread to the back), vomiting, or tiredness.
Severe allergic reactions are rare, but if you have symptoms of hives, trouble breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical attention.
Report side effects to your doctor. This is not a full list of side effects and others may occur. Before taking Glyxambi, discuss potential side effects with your doctor.
