What is Rhophylac?

Rhophylac is a brand-name prescription drug containing human antibodies (called “immunoglobulins” or “Ig”) to prevent or suppress the development of antibodies against Rh-positive blood in pregnant mothers with Rh-negative blood and carrying a fetus that may have Rh-positive blood, in patients with Rh-negative blood who have improperly received a transfusion of Rh-positive blood, or to suppress the immune system in patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. Rhesus factor, or Rh, is a protein that is found on the surface of blood cells. Patients who have this protein are Rh-positive and patients who don't have it are Rh-negative. If blood with rhesus factor is introduced into the bloodstream of an Rh-negative person, that person will develop antibodies (immunization) to the rhesus factor and the immune system will destroy the foreign blood cells. An Rh-negative mother with an Rh-positive baby will produce antibodies against the fetus's blood which will destroy the baby's red blood cells and kill the baby. For blood transfusions, if Rh-positive blood is mistakenly introduced into the bloodstream of an Rh-negative patient, the immune system will develop antibodies to the blood cells and destroy them, essentially destroying the entire blood transfusion. Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is an auto-immune disease in children. Cells in the spleen target platelets in the blood as foreign invaders. Platelets are small, flat cells in the bloodstream that are responsible for blood clotting. Without enough platelets in the blood, patients are subject to excessive bleeding and bruising. The immunoglobulins in Rhophylac prevent cells in the spleen from destroying platelets. Rhophylac is administered as a single intravenous or intramuscular injection by a healthcare professional. Rhophylac is administered as an IV infusion for patients with ITP.

What are the side effects of Rhophylac?

Most patients who receive a Rhophylac injection will experience injection site reactions, such as pain, irritation, swelling, redness, and itching. Other side effects will depend on the dose used. Patients who are given an injection to suppress Rh immunization will very rarely experience side effects other than site reactions. Around 7 in 10 patients with ITP who receive given higher doses of Rhophylac will usually experience other side effects including chills, fever, and headache. Severe reactions were reported in around 4% of patients receiving Rhophylac for ITP during clinical trials. Severe reactions have included the destruction of red blood cells (hemolysis), increased blood pressure, anemia, kidney problems, blood clotting, and, in very rare circumstances, death. Allergic reactions are rare but can include anaphylaxis, a dangerous drop in blood pressure. Watch for allergic reactions to Rhophylac such as rash, trouble breathing, or swelling. If you experience any of these effects and suspect you are having an allergic reaction, get emergency medical help. This is not a complete list of possible side effects.
