Prescription toothpastes have high levels of sodium fluoride. The highest concentration products are marketed as sodium fluoride 5000 or sodium fluoride 1.1% toothpastes or gels. That’s five times the concentration of sodium fluoride in store-bought toothpastes. The extra sodium fluoride provides much more cavity-fighting protection and can remineralize decayed teeth. However, there is a significant risk of fluoride poisoning, especially in children.

Prescription sodium fluoride 5000 toothpastes and gels prevent cavities and reverse tooth decay. It is prescribed to adults and children 6 years of age and older who are significantly at risk for cavities or who have high levels of tooth decay.

How to take Sodium Fluoride 5000

  • The prescriber will tell you how much medicine to use, how often to use the product, and when to use the product. Do not use more than directed.

  • Do not swallow this medicine. It is for topical use on your teeth only.

  • Use sodium fluoride 5000 products once daily in place of regular toothpaste, preferably at bedtime.

  • Use sodium fluoride 5000 products with potassium nitrate (sensitive formulations) twice daily in place of regular toothpaste, once in the morning and once in the evening.

  • Apply a thin strip of paste or gel to a toothbrush.

  • Brush your teeth thoroughly for one or two minutes (instructions will vary by product).

  • Spit out after brushing.

  • Do not rinse your mouth, eat, or drink for 30 minutes.

  • Children should rinse their mouths immediately after use and spit out the rinse.

  • Store sodium fluoride 5000 paste or gel at room temperature.

What to do if you miss a dose of Sodium Fluoride 5000

  • Ask the prescriber what to do in case a dose is missed. 

  • Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

  • Do not use on a child younger than 6 unless the prescriber instructs you to.

    • If sodium fluoride 5000 is prescribed to a child younger than 6, an adult should supervise the child to prevent swallowing during brushing.

  • Before starting sodium fluoride 5000, tell the prescriber if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have allergies.

  • Adults should always supervise children using this product to ensure they do not swallow the medicine. 

  • Regularly using too much sodium fluoride 5000, can cause white patches or stains on the teeth. If this happens, stop using the medicine and call the prescriber.

  • Do not swallow this toothpaste, or let a child swallow it or get into it accidentally.

    • Ingesting large amounts of this toothpaste can cause serious side effects.

    • If a small amount of the paste or gel is eaten, drink milk or eat another food rich in soluble calcium.

    • If large amounts are eaten, induce vomiting, supply soluble calcium (like milk), and get emergency medical care.

    • Always keep this product out of the reach of children.
