What is Spikevax?

The Spikevax COVID-19 vaccine is a COVID-19 vaccine made by the company Moderna. This vaccine can be given to people 12 years of age and older. COVID-19 is a viral infection caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. COVID-19 can cause various symptoms, which can range from mild to life-threatening, including cough, fever, chills, difficulty breathing, fatigue, body aches, headache, sore throat, stuffy or runny nose, loss of taste or smell, and stomach problems like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

The 2023-2024 formula is the updated COVID-19 vaccine, which contains updated strains compared to the original vaccine. You can get this vaccine from your health care provider, local health centers, or at a pharmacy (such as various CVS Pharmacy locations). You can usually contact your local pharmacy for an appointment, or check the vaccine finder website.

Before getting Spikevax, tell your healthcare provider or pharmacist about all of your medical conditions, including if you:

  • Have any allergies or have had a severe allergic reaction to a COVID vaccine

  • Have had myocarditis or pericarditis

  • Currently have a fever

  • Are immunocompromised

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding

  • Have a bleeding disorder

  • Take a blood thinner medicine

  • Have ever fainted after shots

  • Have received any other COVID vaccines

You can also find more information about COVID-19 vaccines as well as other vaccines at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website.

What are the side effects of Spikevax?

Common side effects of Spikevax include injection site reactions (such as redness, pain, tenderness, and swelling), fatigue, headache, muscle or joint pain, chills, nausea and vomiting, and swelling and tenderness in the armpit.

Severe side effects, which are rare, may include fainting and increased risk of myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) and pericarditis (swelling and irritation of the membrane around the heart). These heart complications are very rare, and most commonly have occurred in males 18-24 years of age. However, be alert to chest pain, shortness of breath, or feeling like the heart is beating fast, fluttering, or pounding. If you have any of these symptoms (which generally occur in the two weeks after getting the vaccine), get emergency medical help right away.

Allergic reactions require emergency medical attention (symptoms may include hives, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat). You will be monitored for a short time after getting your vaccine.

Are there any known contraindications with Spikevax?

Patients should not receive the Spikevax vaccine if they have a history of severe allergic reactions to any ingredient in Spikevax, or a severe allergic reaction to a previous dose of a Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. If you are not sure whether Spikevax is safe for you, ask your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Has Spikevax been FDA approved?

Yes, Spikevax is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

What is the difference between Spikevax and Moderna vaccine?

The Spikevax and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines can be used interchangeably.

The Moderna Bivalent COVID-19 vaccine is made the same way as the Spikevax and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines but also contains an Omicron component to protect against the Omicron variant of the virus.

How long does it take for Spikevax to work?

According to the CDC, it takes a few weeks until the body builds up an immune response against COVID-19.
