Arexvy is a vaccine that is used to prevent lower respiratory tract disease (such as pneumonia) caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). RSV is a common respiratory virus. It usually causes cold-like symptoms that are mild and last for less than two weeks. However, RSV can be serious. Older adults and infants have a higher likelihood of developing severe RSV that requires a hospital stay. An RSV vaccine can help lower this risk.
Arexvy can be used in individuals ages 60 years or older. This vaccine is not approved for use in anyone under 60 years old.
After your injection at a pharmacy or healthcare facility, you will be monitored for a short period of time in case of allergic reactions or fainting.
The most common side effects of Arexvy are:
Pain at the injection site
Fatigue
Headache
Fever
Muscle pain
Joint pain
These side effects are generally mild and should go away within a few days.
In the event of an allergic reaction, you should seek emergency medical help right away. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include hives, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
This vaccine is contraindicated (should not be used in) anyone who is allergic to any ingredient in Arexvy.
Live vaccines (such as the MMR vaccine) use a weakened form of the germ that causes a disease. Arexvy is not a live vaccine.
Arexvy, also known as GSK RSVPreF3 Vaccine, is a protein subunit vaccine and does not contain live virus. It contains a protein that is found on the surface of RSV. Arexvy also contains an adjuvant, which is added to a vaccine to boost immune response.
Abrysvo and Arexvy are both RSV vaccines that require one dose and are injected into a muscle. Either vaccine can be used to prevent LRTD caused by RSV in people ages 60 years or older. Side effects are similar.
However, Abrysvo can also be used in pregnant individuals who are between 32 and 36 weeks of gestation to prevent LRTD caused by RSV in infants from birth through 6 months. If you are pregnant, ask your healthcare provider about Abrysvo. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends one dose of Abrysvo for pregnant individuals between 32 and 36 weeks.
Arexvy is not approved for pregnant individuals. It is only approved for those who are 60 years or older.
If you are 60 years or older, the ACIP recommends a single dose of RSV vaccine, either Abyrsvo or Arexvy. Consult your pharmacist or healthcare provider about vaccine availability and medical advice on the best option for you.
