What is Tiazac?

Tiazac is an extended-release blood pressure reducing drug, or antihypertensive, for patients with high blood pressure not due to illness or some other cause. Tiazac is also used to prevent heart pain (angina) in patients with chronic stable angina. Tiazac is a generic version of Cardizem XT. Tiazac relaxes the muscles of the heart and dilates blood vessels. The combined effect is to lower blood pressure.

The active ingredient in Tiazac, diltiazem, belongs to a class of blood pressure reducing medications called calcium channel blockers. The “calcium channel” is a process that powers the electrical signals that pass through nerves and activate muscles to contract. Among the many consequences of blocking this process is a reduction in the strength of the heart and the strength of blood vessels. When the heart beats with less strength, blood pressure goes down. As the muscles in the blood vessels lose strength, blood vessels get wider, and blood pressure goes down.
