Tricitrates is a generic prescription drug used to alkalize urine that is too acidic. Tricitrates is prescribed to patients diagnosed with uric acid kidney stones, gout, or metabolic acidosis due to acidic urine. The active ingredients in Tricitrates are potassium citrate, sodium citrate, and citric acid. These are citrates that make urine more alkali, restoring a normal pH.
Uric acid is normally soluble in urine, but forms crystals and stones in the kidney with the urine becomes too acidic. When the urine is returned to a normal pH, the stones and crystals dissolve. Tricitrates also prevents uric acid stones from forming in patients with high urine acid levels.
Gout is a painful and debilitating joint disease caused by high acid content in the urine. Uric acids form in the kidneys and can travel through the body, lodging eventually in joints.
Metabolic acidosis is a condition in which acid builds up in the body. It has many causes. When it is caused by acid urine, reducing the acid in the urine helps to reverse the condition.
Tricitrates is taken as an oral solution. Tricitrates is not approved as safe and effective by the FDA.
The most common side effects of Tricitrates are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach upset, weakness, and lightheadedness. Other more serious but rare side effects of Tricitrates are chest pain and fast, irregular heartbeat. Allergic reactions to Tricitrates are highly unlikely. This is not a complete list of side effects, so talk with your doctor about any concerns or questions you may have.
