What is Zarontin?

Zarontin is a prescription drug that controls seizures in patients with petit mal or absence epilepsy, a nervous system disorder that causes brief seizures of less than 15 seconds. Absence seizures sometimes are barely noticeable.

The active ingredient in Zarontin, ethosuximide, belongs to a class of drugs called anticonvulsants. Epileptic seizures are caused by the repetitive, overexcited, and abnormal firing of nerve cells in the brain, usually triggered by a situation or other stimulus. Zarontin prevents the repetitive firing of nerves by reducing the brain's excitability.

Zarontin is taken as a tablet or oral solution once or twice daily. Zarontin is usually prescribed to children.

What are the side effects of Zarontin?

The most common side effects of Zarontin include, but are not limited to, headache, dizziness, upset stomach, nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, weight loss, loss of balance, loss of coordination, and feeling tired.

Allergic reactions are extremely rare but include hives, rashes, itching, and trouble breathing.
