Plenvu powder-oral solution is a brand-name prescription drug used for bowel preparation before a colonoscopy procedure in adults. It works as an osmotic laxative to pull water into the intestines and produce loose, watery stools. The active ingredients include potassium chloride, sodium chloride, ascorbic acid, sodium sulfate, and sodium ascorbate. It is usually recommended to be taken as two doses in a one-day or two-day regimen. In addition to drawing water into the colon and stimulating bowel movements, Plenvu helps replace electrolytes that may be passed in the stool. You should let your doctor know if you have any underlying medical conditions such as bowel perforation, gastric retention, ileus, or a history of gastrointestinal obstruction before starting treatment with Plenvu.
Plenvu comes as a powder that needs to be mixed thoroughly with water before use. Do not add any sweeteners, flavorings or other beverages to the solution. Instructions on the use of Plenvu will be provided by your healthcare provider. Strictly adhere to the prescribed dosing regimen of Plenvu and consult the full prescribing information given by your doctor. Do not take other laxatives with Plenvu and avoid taking other oral medications within one hour before or after starting treatment with Plenvu. Drink plenty of clear liquids after starting treatment and avoid beverages with pulp material. Do not eat or drink anything two hours before your examination. Store the powder at room temperature away from light or heat. The solution should be consumed within 6 hours of being mixed.
The most common side effects of Plenvu include nausea, vomiting, dehydration, and abdominal pain or discomfort. Consult your doctor if side effects persist or worsen. Severe bloating or abdominal pain may be relieved by prolonging the time period between doses or briefly stopping the use of the medication.
Severe allergic reactions to Plenvu are not common but may present as hives, swelling of the face, and trouble breathing. Contact your healthcare professional if you experience adverse effects like vomiting, dizziness, urinating less often than usual, and headaches. Plenvu may cause severe dehydration or electrolyte imbalances. Signs of severe fluid loss or electrolyte imbalances may include abnormal heartbeat and seizures. Tell your doctor if you have heart or kidney problems before using Plenvu.
This is not a complete list of side effects. Seek medical advice from your doctor to make sure that Plenvu is safe for you to use. You can also report unlisted side effects you may experience to the FDA.
