These are the top U.S. cities that saved the most on prescriptions in 2020

Louisville, Dallas, and Las Vegas are all very different cities. One thing they have in common? A top-ranked year in prescription savings. Each of these places (plus seven more), made this year’s list of the cities that saved the most on prescriptions with SingleCare.

Top 10 cities that saved the most with SingleCare*

SingleCare researchers found that the Rx discounts for folks across the country have been significant. Savings stretched from the southeast region of the country (hi, Kentucky!) to the sunny Atlantic beaches of Miami along with the heartland of Kansas City.

  1. Miami
  2. Las Vegas
  3. Atlanta
  4. Houston

1. Miami

Miami took the number one spot, of most prescription savings per capita of the 50 most populous cities in the U.S., and after Texas, the most SingleCare members of any top 10 city.

Why did they save so much? Miami ranks 34 in the healthiest cities in the U.S., with a health care ranking of 73. That could mean residents of this metropolis encounter more barriers to preventive care, which may increase the need for prescriptions.

2. Las Vegas

SingleCare members in Las Vegas used their savings cards on all of their prescriptions—not just the more expensive ones. Lisinopril, a high blood pressure medication and one of the first ACE inhibitors to go generic (making it very inexpensive) is the most prescribed medication in Las Vegas, according to our research. Member savings and popular medications being filled within city limits isn’t a coincidence. Las Vegas members show you that every dollar counts—especially when you’re saving.

3. Atlanta

SingleCare members in Atlanta took third place per capita in 2020. Atlanta, like most urban areas, has better access to healthcare and prescription medication than rural areas. In fact, there are more than 200 pharmacies in the city—making it convenient to get your Rx medications and save on them.

4. Houston 5. Arlington, and 7. Dallas

SingleCare users in Texas experienced some of the biggest prescription savings. Dallas, Houston, and Arlington combined, saved more than half of the total member savings across the top 10 list in just those three cities!

What makes savings even bigger in Texas? Well, it probably has less to do with that old tagline than it does with SingleCare’s recent pharmacy expansion in the Lone Star State. In summer 2020, SingleCare announced a new partnership with supermarket chain H-E-B, which has expanded the number of locations where you can use your SingleCare pharmacy card in Texas as H-E-B has nearly 350 stores throughout Texas.

6. Tampa, Fla.

Tampa’s SingleCare members took sixth place in 2020. In a recent Inc.com story, Tampa ranked 74th on a list of the 100 Most Stressed Out Cities in the U.S. Maybe these savings will help.

8. Charlotte, N.C.

SingleCare members in Charlotte ranked eighth per capita. Amphetamine/dextroamphetamine, an ADHD medication, is the most popular prescription in the city in 2020—and one that SingleCare offers significant discounts for. Count big savings on widely prescribed medications as one reason Charlotte residents have a lot more money back in their pockets.

9. Kansas City, Mo.

Kansas City ranks number nine on our list for the highest prescription savings in 2020, but it ranks quite poorly on other lists. In the rankings of healthiest cities in America, Kansas City comes in at lowly 119th. We’re glad our savings can help in cities where healthcare is a little harder to access.

10. Louisville, Ky.

While Louisville came in 10th on our list based on savings per capita, Louisville actually had the highest savings per member. That means Louisville members are able to save significantly (up to 80%) on more expensive medications.

How can you save on prescriptions this year?

When you don’t have insurance that covers prescription costs—or if you have insurance that doesn’t cover prescription costs adequately—it can be tough to make ends meet and to purchase essential medications. That’s why it’s vital to have more transparency around drug costs and savings opportunities.

“Price transparency for prescription drugs is an essential tool for people in the U.S. who may have a hard time affording their medications,” says Shaili Gandhi, Pharm.D., the vice president of formulary operations at SingleCare. “Many don’t realize that they could save hundreds of dollars a month on their Rx with a prescription discount card—and by comparing prices between pharmacies.”

But SingleCare members in these 10 cities sure do! If you’re ready to start saving, it’s easy!

  1. Search for your medication on singlecare.com.
  2. Find the coupon.
  3. Show it to your pharmacist.

You can text, print, or email the coupon to yourself for use at the pharmacy—or even download the SingleCare app on the App Store or on Google Play. When you sign up for SingleCare, you’ll immediately receive $3 off your next eligible prescription refill. Plus, with every eligible script filled with SingleCare, members earn member discounts that will be applied to future purchases.

Wondering what the catch is? There isn’t one! SingleCare partners directly with pharmacies to offer you consistently low prices—for free.
