What is Abilify: Uses, Warnings & Interactions

Updated May 14, 2025  •  Published Dec 30, 2020

Abilify is a brand-name prescription antipsychotic used to treat schizophrenia and other psychiatric conditions. Its active ingredient, aripiprazole, selectively balances dopamine levels in the brain. In this way, aripiprazole effectively treats psychiatric problems without some of the side effects of other antipsychotics. Daily Abilify doses are taken as tablets, dissolvable tablets, or oral solution. Doctors can give Abilify injections in an emergency or extended-release injections every month or two months to avoid daily dosing.
