Aimovig is an FDA-approved prescription drug used for the prevention of migraine in adults. It is also referred to as a calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) inhibitor that works by blocking the activation of certain proteins that produce migraine attacks. These proteins usually cause blood vessels to dilate, leading to the inflammation that causes migraine pain. Aimovig is a monoclonal antibody (its chemical name is erenumab-aooe) made by recombinant DNA technology. According to the Migraine Research Foundation, 1 in 4 households in the United States includes someone living with migraine. If you have several migraine headaches per month or migraines that interfere with your quality of life, ask your healthcare provider if a preventive medication is right for you.
Aimovig is available in a 70 mg and 140 mg auto-injector pen or prefilled syringe. Aimovig is injected subcutaneously (under the skin) once a month. This medication should be stored in a refrigerator. Before use, remove it from the fridge and allow it to warm to room temperature for at least 30 minutes. You should clean the injection site with rubbing alcohol before each dose and change the injection site every time to reduce injury to your skin.
Store Aimovig in the refrigerator in the original carton until it is ready to use. If Aimovig is taken out of the fridge, it should be kept at room temperature in the original carton and used within seven days. Discard Aimovig if it has been left at room temperature for more than seven days. Do not freeze or shake Aimovig.
The most common side effects of Aimovig include injection site reactions (pain, redness, and itching).
Other adverse effects include, but are not limited to, increased blood pressure, cramps, and muscle spasms. Constipation with serious complications may occur—some cases have required medical care in the hospital and surgery. Report constipation to your healthcare provider.
Rare but serious allergic reactions may occur. If you experience hives, trouble breathing, or swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical help.
If side effects persist for an extended period or if you experience any other side effects not included in this list, you should seek medical advice from your healthcare professional.
Other side effects, including serious side effects, may occur. Read the medication guide before taking Aimovig for important safety information and additional information.
Aimovig should not be taken by anyone who is allergic to erenumab, any drug in the CGRP antagonist drug class, or any inactive ingredient in Aimovig.
Aimovig should be used with caution in people with high blood pressure.
Consult your healthcare provider if you have any questions about the safety of Aimovig.
Some patients have reported that Aimovig has not been as effective over time. However, researchers have not confirmed that this is a common effect, and speculate that in some cases, patients think the medicine is less effective, but another issue may be to blame. For example, some people administer the monthly injection a few days late, which may affect outcomes. If you take Aimovig and feel like it is not working as well, consult your healthcare provider for medical advice.
Aimovig is only available as a brand-name prescription drug. There are currently no generic or biosimilar versions of Aimovig available on the market. (Aimovig is a biologic drug, which means that it is made from living cells. A biosimilar is like a generic, but it is made for a biologic drug such as Aimovig.) Until a more affordable alternative becomes available, you can save on your Aimovig cost by using the Aimovig coupons above, paying just $752.78 for 1, 1ml of 140mg/ml pen.
