Qulipta is an oral prescription medication that contains the active ingredient atogepant. Qulipta is classified as a calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor antagonist. It works by blocking CGRP, a substance that causes pain and inflammation associated with migraine. Qulipta is made by the pharmaceutical company AbbVie Inc. Qulipta is available in brand name. There is no generic version available.
Qulipta can be used to treat episodic migraine or chronic migraine. People with episodic migraine have up to 14 headache days per month. People with chronic migraine have 15 or more headache days per month.
Qulipta is generally prescribed to be taken once a day and can be taken with or without food. People with episodic migraine are usually prescribed 10 mg, 30 mg, or 60 mg once daily. Those with chronic migraine are usually prescribed a dose of 60 mg once daily.
Before taking Qulipta, tell your healthcare provider about any medical conditions you have, including if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Qulipta may harm an unborn baby and should not be used during pregnancy unless your healthcare provider advises otherwise.
Also, tell your healthcare provider about all of the medications you take, including prescription and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements.
The most common side effects of Qulipta are nausea, constipation, fatigue, and sleepiness. Some people experience other side effects, such as decreased appetite or dizziness.
Serious allergic reactions are very rare and may cause symptoms such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. These symptoms require emergency medical help.
Other side effects may occur. You can ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist for more information and a full list of side effects.
In clinical trials for Qulipta, a small percentage of participants reported decreased appetite and weight loss. Specifically, depending on the dose, 1 to 3% of people taking Qulipta reported a decreased appetite, compared to less than 1% of those who took a placebo (inactive medicine). Additionally, 3 to 5% of people taking Qulipta experienced a weight loss of at least 7% of their body weight, while 2.5% of those on a placebo reported similar weight loss.
Nurtec ODT, an orally disintegrating tablet containing the active ingredient rimegepant, belongs to the CGRP antagonist drug class. Similar to Qulipta, Nurtec is approved for the prevention of episodic migraine but not for chronic migraine prevention. For episodic migraine prevention, Nurtec ODT is taken every other day. It can also be used for the acute treatment of migraine, with or without aura.
Since Nurtec ODT and Qulipta are both approved for preventing episodic migraine, this is the only area where they can be directly compared. Some studies suggest that Qulipta may reduce migraine days more effectively than Nurtec ODT. However, individual responses to these medications can vary, and there are many factors to consider when choosing the best treatment, such as other medical conditions you have and potential side effects and drug interactions. Your healthcare provider can offer more personalized medical advice and help determine which medication might be best for you.
