Zavzpret is a drug that contains the active ingredient zavegepant. This nasal spray is FDA-approved for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in adults. It does not prevent migraine. Zavzpret is classified as a calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor antagonist, or CGRP receptor antagonist. It works by blocking the activity of calcitonin gene-related peptide, a protein in the brain that is associated with migraine.
Common side effects in people who take Zavzpret include altered taste, nausea, vomiting, and nasal discomfort.
If you have symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical attention.
This is not a full list of side effects, and others may occur. Consult your pharmacist or other healthcare professional for more information about side effects.
You should not take Zavzpret if you are allergic to zavegepant or any of the ingredients in this medication. Before taking Zavzpret, tell your healthcare professional about any medical conditions you have, such as kidney or liver problems, or if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Before you take Zavzpret, tell your doctor about all the medications you take, including prescription and OTC medicines, vitamins, and supplements.
While taking Zavzpret, avoid using a nasal decongestant, such as Afrin. However, if you need to use a nasal decongestant, use it at least one hour after using Zavzpret.
Zavzpret starts to work quickly, reaching its highest levels in about 30 minutes. Because it starts working quickly, you may start to feel better within minutes, but pain relief may take up to two hours. If your migraine worsens or does not improve, consult your healthcare provider for professional medical advice.
The dose of Zavzpret is one spray in one nostril, if needed. Only one spray can be administered in a 24-hour period. Clinical trials have not studied using this medication more than 8 times in 30 days. You can ask your healthcare provider for more information about dosing.
