Apokyn (apomorphine) is a prescription drug used, as needed, to treat loss of control of body movements in people with advanced Parkinson's disease (PD). This condition is also called hypomobility or “off episodes”. Symptoms such as muscle stiffness, slow movements, and difficulty starting movements may occur during a PD patient's “off episode”. Apokyn is thought to improve your ability to control your movements when it is used during an off episode. Apokyn has similar effects as dopamine, which occurs naturally in your body. Dopamine plays a part in controlling the movements a person makes, as well as their emotional responses. Low levels of dopamine in the brain are associated with Parkinson's disease.
To make sure Apokyn is right for you, tell your doctor if you have an electrolyte imbalance (such as low levels of potassium or magnesium in your blood), a slow heart rate, low blood pressure or dizzy spells, a history of "Long QT syndrome," a history of stroke or heart attack, asthma, sulfite allergy, or liver or kidney disease.
While taking Apokyn You may have increased sexual urges, unusual urges to gamble, or other intense urges. Ask your doctor for medical advice if you believe you have any intense or unusual urges.
It is important to note that Apokyn is not used to prevent off episodes nor does it take the place of your other medicines for PD.
Possible side effects of Apokyn include swelling, confusion, yawning, runny nose, or itching, bruising, or swelling where the medicine was injected.
Serious allergic reactions to this medication are usually rare. However, you should seek immediate medical attention if you begin to experience symptoms of a serious allergic reaction such as itching, rash, swelling in your face or throat, severe dizziness,
