Dupixent (dupilumab) is an injectable prescription medication that is approved by the FDA to treat:
Moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis in adults and children 6 months and older
Moderate to severe eosinophilic asthma or asthma that requires oral corticosteroids in adults and children 6 years and older
Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps in adults
Eosinophilic esophagitis in adults and children 1 year and older (who weigh at least 33 pounds)
Prurigo nodularis in adults
Inadequately controlled COPD in adults with an eosinophilic phenotype
Dupixent is generally used in addition to other medication(s) when other treatments have not adequately controlled the condition.
Dupixent is a monoclonal antibody. It works by blocking natural proteins, interleukin 4 and 13. This prevents inflammation and swelling.
Dupixent should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Your healthcare provider will teach you how to prepare and inject this medication. Dupixent can be injected in the abdomen (at least two inches away from the belly button), thigh, or upper arm by a caregiver—or the abdomen or thigh if you self-inject. The site of administration should be rotated with each injection to reduce injection site irritation.
Dupixent should be stored in the refrigerator; however, it should only be taken after being allowed to naturally warm to room temperature for at least 45 minutes prior to administration. Do not shake or expose this medication to sunlight. If Dupixent becomes cloudy or discolored, do not use it.
If you need additional support on self-injecting Dupixent, you can contact the Dupixent MyWay registered nurse educators, who can help with supplemental injection training online, over the phone, or in person.
If you have other medical conditions or if you are using other medications, tell your doctor before you use Dupixent. Your healthcare provider can give you the best medical advice on what medications can be taken along with Dupixent, which will minimize your risk of drug interactions.
Some of the most common side effects of Dupixent include injection site reactions such as redness, irritation, and pain in the injected area. Other common side effects include dizziness, diarrhea, muscle pain, toothache, mouth or lip sores, insomnia, and upper respiratory tract infections.
If you have symptoms of an allergic reaction to Dupixent, such as hives, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical help. Other serious side effects may occur. Contact your healthcare professional or get emergency medical help immediately should you experience joint pain, eye pain, changes in vision, or numbness in your extremities.
This is not a full list of side effects, and others can occur. Seek medical advice and additional medical information from your doctor to make sure Dupixent is safe for you.
Weight gain is not a known side effect of Dupixent. In clinical trials, weight gain was not reported. One very small study found that people who took Dupixent for severe atopic dermatitis gained some weight. However, people who take Dupixent also often take other medications that may cause weight gain, such as steroids. Also, an association was not established between Dupixent and weight gain in this study. Consult your healthcare provider for medical advice if you have questions or concerns about Dupixent and weight gain.
