What is Bexagliflozin?

Bexagliflozin is a once-daily oral medication used to improve glycemic control (control of blood glucose levels) in adults with Type 2 diabetes. Healthcare professionals typically recommend using this medication along with diet and exercise. The usual dose is 20 milligrams (mg) by mouth one time daily in the morning. Bexagliflozin can be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole; do not chew or crush the tablet. Bexagliflozin is made by TheracosBio, LLC.

Store Bexagliflozin at room temperature, away from direct light, heat, and moisture. Keep out of reach and out of sight of children and pets.

What are the side effects of Bexagliflozin?

The most common side effects of Bexagliflozin include vaginal yeast infections (also known as female genital mycotic infections) and urinary tract infections (UTIs). Changes in urination are also common, including an urgent need to urinate more frequently, urinate in larger amounts, or use the bathroom at night. Yeast infections of the penis in men can occur as well.

Serious side effects may also occur. For example, some people experience serious urinary tract infections that may lead to hospitalization. Tell your healthcare professional if you have symptoms of a UTI, such as burning when you urinate, needing to urinate more often, feeling an urgent need to urinate, pelvic pain, blood in the urine, fever, back pain, nausea, or vomiting.

Bexagliflozin may cause low blood sugar, especially if taken along with certain medications or insulin injections. Symptoms of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) include headache, confusion, sweating, dizziness, drowsiness, hunger, shaking, weakness, or fast heartbeat. Talk to your healthcare provider about monitoring your blood sugar and what to do if your blood sugar is too low or too high.

In rare cases, some people may develop a serious bacterial infection in the area between and around the anus and genitals, called necrotizing fasciitis of the perineum. This condition can lead to hospitalization, surgeries, and even death. Get emergency medical help if you have a fever or weakness—along with pain, tenderness, swelling, or redness in the genital/anus area.

Bexagliflozin may cause serious allergic reactions. Get emergency medical help if you have hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Other serious effects may include ketoacidosis, dehydration, increased risk of lower limb amputations, and others.

This is not a full list of side effects, and others may occur. Consult your healthcare provider or pharmacist for a full list of side effects.

Are there any known interactions or contraindications with Bexagliflozin?

Before you take Bexagliflozin, tell your doctor about all of your chronic conditions, allergies to medications, and medications you take, including prescription drugs, OTC medicines, and natural products such as vitamins or supplements.

You should not take Bexagliflozin if you are allergic to bexagliflozin, any SGLT 2 inhibitor, or any ingredient in the medication. Bexagliflozin is not for use in Type 1 diabetes. People with severe kidney disease should not take Bexagliflozin.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare provider for medical advice. In most cases, a different medication may be recommended by your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

Ask your healthcare provider about drug interactions and how they may affect you. Some drug interactions include, but are not limited to:

  • Insulin

  • Certain diabetes medications, such as glimepiride, glyburide, or glipizide

  • Lithium

Is Bexagliflozin approved for weight loss?

While Bexagliflozin is not FDA-approved for weight loss, people who take it for Type 2 diabetes often experience weight loss as a side effect, especially when using it along with diet and exercise.

Which is better, metformin or Bexagliflozin?

Metformin is often used as a first-choice drug for Type 2 diabetes. However, SGLT2 inhibitors such as Bexagliflozin are frequently used along with metformin, as many people require more than one medication to help manage blood glucose levels—this is known as combination therapy. Consult your healthcare provider for medical advice on your condition and the best treatment for you.
