What is Brenzavvy?

Brenzavvy is a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT 2) inhibitor made by the company TheracosBio, LLC. It is used in adults with Type 2 diabetes, along with diet and exercise, to improve blood sugar control. Brenzavvy works by helping the kidneys eliminate glucose (sugar) in the urine, which helps improve blood glucose levels. Brenzavvy is available as a tablet that is taken by mouth once daily in the morning. You can take Brenzavvy with or without food.

What are the side effects of Brenzavvy?

Common side effects of Brenzavvy include genital yeast infections in women, urinary tract infection (UTI), and increased urination.

People who have symptoms of an allergic reaction should get emergency medical help. Symptoms may include hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Serious side effects may occur, such as kidney problems, low blood pressure, serious urinary tract infections, fractures, Fournier’s gangrene, and others. Fournier’s gangrene can be life-threatening. If you have symptoms like fever or feeling unwell—along with genital or perineal pain, tenderness, redness, or swelling, seek emergency medical attention.

Are there any known contraindications with Brenzavvy?

Before taking Brenzavvy, tell your healthcare professional about all the medical conditions you have. You should not take Brenzavvy if you:

  • Are allergic to bexagliflozin, any ingredient in Brenzavvy, or any SGLT2 inhibitor

  • Are in the second or third trimester of pregnancy

Which is better, Mounjaro or Brenzavvy?

There are many factors to consider when deciding which drug is more appropriate. In individuals where weight loss is needed, Mounjaro may be a better option. However, Mounjaro is an injectable medication, and some individuals may prefer a medicine that is taken by mouth. Because everyone has a unique medical history as well as needs and preferences, it’s best to consult your healthcare provider for medical advice to figure out which medication is best for you.
