Bumetanide is an oral prescription drug that reduces water in the body in patients who have swelling (edema) due to kidney disease, liver disease, or heart failure. Bumetanide is a diuretic (“water pill”) that flushes the body of water and salt.
Bumetanide belongs to a class of diuretics called loop diuretics. Bumetanide works by inhibiting the kidney's ability to reabsorb salt in a particular place in the kidneys. Loop diuretics are the strongest type of diuretics.
The most common side effects of Bumetanide are low blood pressure, dizziness, headache, nausea, muscle cramps, low blood pressure, sun sensitivity, and low levels of potassium and sodium. In rare cases, mental and mood changes can also occur including hallucinations, memory problems, and trouble concentrating.
A serious side effect of Bumetanide is low levels of potassium in the bloodstream. Bumetanide also prevents potassium from being reabsorbed into the bloodstream, so potassium levels can quickly drop. Low potassium can result in constipation, irregular heartbeat, fatigue, muscle weakness or spasms, numbness and tingling, and even death (when potassium is severely low). Allergic reactions are rare but can be severe, such as hives, trouble breathing and swelling—these symptoms require emergency medical attention. Symptoms of a severe skin reaction (fever, burning eyes or throat, blistering or peeling skin, red or purple rash) also require emergency medical attention.
As a powerful diuretic, Bumetanide may cause severe dehydration. The symptoms of dehydration are dry mouth, thirst, muscle cramps, severe dizziness, and confusion, among others. When you take Bumetanide, it is important to avoid dehydration. Your healthcare provider will tell you what to do regarding fluid intake if you are sick.
This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects or drug interactions. You can report negative side effects to the FDA. Before you take Bumetanide, tell your provider about all of your medical conditions and all of the medicines you take. This includes Rx and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements. Keep Bumetanide out of reach and out of sight of children and pets.
