What is Bumex?

Bumex is an oral prescription drug that reduces water in the body in patients who have swelling (edema) due to kidney disease, liver disease, heart failure, or cancer. Bumex is a diuretic (“water pill”) that flushes the body of water and salt.

The active ingredient in Bumex, bumetanide, belongs to a class of diuretics called loop diuretics. Bumetanide works by inhibiting the kidney's ability to reabsorb salt in a particular place in the kidneys. Loop diuretics are the strongest and fastest-acting diuretics.

What are the side effects of Bumex?

While medicines may have side effects, many people experience no or minimal side effects.

The most common physical side effects of Bumex are low blood pressure, dizziness, fatigue, headache, nausea, stomach pain, seizures, and an irregular heartbeat. Mental and mood changes can also occur including hallucinations, memory problems, and trouble concentrating. The most serious side effect of Bumex is low levels of potassium in the bloodstream. Bumex also prevents potassium from being reabsorbed into the bloodstream, so potassium levels can quickly drop. Low potassium can result in irregular heartbeat, confusion, inability to move correctly, muscle paralysis, and even death. Allergic reactions are rare but can be severe, such as trouble breathing and swelling.

As a powerful diuretic, Bumex may cause severe dehydration. The symptoms of dehydration are dry mouth, thirst, muscle cramps, severe dizziness, and confusion, among others.

This is not a complete list of side effects that may occur. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about possible side effects before taking this medicine.
