What is Ciprofloxacin Hcl? Uses, warnings & side effects

Updated Feb 11, 2026  •  Published Oct 5, 2021

Ciprofloxacin is a generic antibiotic that can treat a wide spectrum of bacterial infections of the skin, bones, joints, lungs, abdomen, eyes, ears, and urinary tract. Mild side effects are relatively minimal because treatment only lasts a few days, but ciprofloxacin can cause serious adverse effects even weeks or months after the drug has been stopped. For this reason, it is not a first-choice antibiotic for certain types of infections. Most people will take ciprofloxacin tablets, but ciprofloxacin can be prescribed as eye drops and ear drops for eye and ear infections.
