Clarithromycin is a generic drug that is manufactured by several companies, including Apotex Corp. Biaxin is the brand-name drug that contains Clarithromycin.
Clarithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that fights bacteria in your body. It is used to treat bacterial infections in different parts of the body. For example, it can be used in combination with other medicines to treat duodenal ulcers caused by H. pylori. Clarithromycin is also used to prevent and treat Mycobacterium Avium complex (MAC) infection. Other infections Clarithromycin treats include sinus infections, pneumonia, skin and skin structure infections, and ear infections. Clarithromycin is usually prescribed for 7 to 14 days. Use this medicine for the full prescribed length of time. Skipping doses may increase your risk of further infection that is resistant to antibiotics. Clarithromycin will not treat colds, flu, COVID-19, or other viral infections. Be sure to store medication in the original container at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light.
If you miss a dose of Clarithromycin, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose. You can take Clarithromycin with meals or milk or on an empty stomach. Keep using Clarithromycin for the full time of treatment as prescribed even if you begin to feel better after the first few doses. Your infection may not clear up if you stop using the medicine too soon. Before taking Clarithromycin, tell your doctor about any medical conditions you have. Also tell your doctor about all of the medicines you take, including Rx, OTC, supplements, and vitamins, because Clarithromycin interacts with many medicines, such as statins (cholesterol medication). Tell your doctor about any allergies to medications. You should not take Clarithromycin if you are allergic to macrolide antibiotics such as Zithromax (azithromycin) or erythromycin. You should not take Clarithromycin if you have ever had liver problems from taking Clarithromycin, or if you have liver or kidney problems and you also take colchicine, a gout medicine.
Common side effects of Clarithromycin include stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or unusual or unpleasant taste in your mouth. If you have ever suffered from heart problems, Clarithromycin should be used with caution, as it may cause a heart attack or stroke years after you have taken this medicine. If you experience chest pain spreading to your jaw or shoulder, trouble breathing, slurred speech, or sudden numbness or weakness on one side of your body, seek medical help immediately. If you have signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, swelling in your mouth or throat, get emergency medical attention right away.
Call your doctor at once if you have severe stomach pain, diarrhea that is watery or bloody, fast or pounding heartbeats, fluttering in your chest, shortness of breath, sudden dizziness (like you might pass out), confusion, spinning sensation, liver problems, loss of appetite, upper stomach pain, tiredness, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), or kidney problems, little or no urination, swelling in your feet or ankles, feeling tired, or short of breath. You can report side effects to your doctor. This is not a full list of side effects and others may occur. Seek advice from your doctor to find out if Clarithromycin is right for you.
Consult your healthcare provider for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects and drug interactions.
