What is Ambien CR?

Ambien CR is an extended-release prescription medicine that is used to treat adults who have trouble falling asleep and/or those who wake up frequently during the night. Ambien CR has two layers. The first layer dissolves fast to help you fall asleep, and the second layer dissolves slowly, helping you stay asleep. Ambien CR is not recommended for persons who are under 18 years old. This medication is a federally controlled substance because it can be abused and can cause dependence.

You should only use Ambien CR if it was prescribed for you and you should use it exactly how it was prescribed. You need to always follow your doctor's dosage instructions. Do not use Ambien CR if you are allergic to any of its ingredients or if you have liver disease.

Before using Ambien CR, inform your doctor about other medical conditions you may have or medications you may be using, to avoid drug interactions or dangerous effects. Avoid drinking alcohol when using Ambien CR, or if you have had alcohol, you should not take this medication. You should not take Ambien CR in combination with medications that make you drowsy or slow your breathing, such as opioid pain medication, other sleeping medicine, muscle relaxers, or anxiety or seizure medication.

Women and people ages 65 years or older need to be extra cautious when using this medication as they could have more side effects and be more likely to fall or be injured.

Take Ambien CR on an empty stomach (at least 2 hours after eating) just before bedtime. Taking Ambien with food does not allow your body to absorb the medicine properly. Swallow the tablet whole. Do not chew, break, or crush the tablet. Only take Ambien CR if you have at least 7 or 8 hours to sleep.

Avoid tasks that require you to be fully alert like driving or operating heavy machinery, the day after you use Ambien CR, until you know how the medicine affects you. You may still feel tired in the morning. Wait until you are fully awake and alert before you walk or drive or operate machinery. Serious injury or death could occur if you perform these activities before you are fully awake and alert.

Important: While using Ambien CR, some persons have been known to sleepwalk, sleep drive, have sexual intercourse, and make and eat meals while not being fully awake. Most people do not remember doing these things. If this happens, you should stop taking Ambien CR and inform your healthcare provider immediately.

Store Ambien CR in the original prescription bottle, and keep tightly closed when not in used. Keep Ambien CR securely out of the reach and out of sight of children and pets.

Possible side effects of Ambien CR include dizziness, headache, back pain, dry mouth, a drugged feeling, palpitations, and constipation or diarrhea. You may also feel drowsy the day after taking Ambien CR.

Mood changes may occur. Report any changes in mood or behavior to your healthcare provider right away.

If you have signs of an allergic reaction, you should get emergency medical attention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include hives, itching, wheezing, trouble breathing, and swelling of your face, lips, throat, and tongue.

This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects or drug interactions. You can report negative side effects to the FDA.
