Cyclomydril is a brand-name prescription drug with no brand-name or generic equivalents.
Cyclomydril is a brand-name prescription eye drops medication used to dilate pupils before eye exams or medical procedures, such as cataract surgery. The active ingredients in Cyclomydril are cyclopentolate hydrochloride and phenylephrine hydrochloride.
Cyclopentolate belongs to a family of drugs called anticholenergics. These drugs block a chemical, acetylcholine, which transmits signals from nerves to muscles. When placed on the eye, it prevents muscles in the iris from closing the iris, so the pupil widens.
Phenylephrine, commonly found in nasal decongestants, stimulates the iris dilator muscle to widen the iris and dilate the pupil.
Cyclomydril is not purchased in pharmacies but administered by a healthcare provider, such as an optometrist or ophthalmologist in a clinical setting or prior to eye procedures. One or two drops of Cyclomydril is applied every five to ten minutes.
The most common physical side effects of Cyclomydril are site reactions, such as stinging or burning on the surface of the eye, or direct effects of dilated pupils such as blurred vision, inability to focus, and sensitivity to light. The phenylephrine in Cyclomydril often causes a rise in the pressure within the eye.
Other side effects include, but are not limited to, fast heartbeat, elevated blood pressure, blood vessel constriction, urinary retention, constipation, decreased salivation and sweating. Mental and mood changes include behavior changes, restlessness, hyperactivity, hallucinations, and disorientation, particularly in children.
Allergic reactions are rare and include swelling of the eyelid, itching, redness, tears, and a rash around the eye.
