What is Cyclomydril?

Cyclomydril is a brand-name prescription eye drops medication used to dilate pupils before eye exams or medical procedures, such as cataract surgery. The active ingredients in Cyclomydril are cyclopentolate hydrochloride and phenylephrine hydrochloride.

Cyclopentolate belongs to a family of drugs called anticholenergics. These drugs block a chemical, acetylcholine, which transmits signals from nerves to muscles. When placed on the eye, it prevents muscles in the iris from closing the iris, so the pupil widens.

Phenylephrine, commonly found in nasal decongestants, stimulates the iris dilator muscle to widen the iris and dilate the pupil.
