What is Dapsone?
Dapsone is used topically for the treatment of acne, particularly inflammatory acne.
Dapsone can be taken as an oral tablet to treat a certain type of skin disorder known as dermatitis herpetiformis. Dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) is a chronic autoimmune skin condition, characterized by a bumpy, itchy rash and blisters. Dapsone is also used with other drugs to treat Hansen's disease.
This drug belongs to a class of drugs known as sulfones. The exact way in which Dapsone works is unknown; however, it is believed to work by decreasing swelling (inflammation) and stopping the growth of bacteria.
It should be noted that oral Dapsone does not work for viral infections, such as the common cold or flu. Unnecessary use or misuse of any antibiotic can lead to decreased effectiveness.
For use in children, a pediatrician should be consulted first. In adults, the tablet form of this medication can be taken by mouth with or without food, usually once daily or as directed by your doctor.
Exposure to sunlight should be avoided while using topical as Dapsone may make your skin more susceptible to sunburns. While on treatment with Dapsone, wear protective clothing and use sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) when you are outdoors.

The most common side effects reported with topical Dapsone use includes dryness, redness, irritation, and oiliness or peeling around the application site. Other side effects of Dapsone may include sore throat, stuffy nose, cough, joint pain, and headache. Consult a healthcare provider if side effects develop, persist, or worsen.
Side effects may resolve on their own as your body gets used to the drug. Your doctor may also be able to offer medical advice on how you can go about preventing or reducing some of these side effects.
This is not a complete list of side effects. Speak to your doctor or healthcare provider for medical advice on other side effects, drug interactions, warnings, and precautions before starting treatment with Dapsone.
