What is Desferal used for?

Desferal is used along with other treatments to treat high iron levels caused by many blood transfusions in adults and children at least 3 years old. It works by helping the kidneys and gallbladder get rid of the extra iron.

How to take Desferal

  • Injection routeYour doctor will prescribe your exact dose and tell you how often it should be given. This medicine is given as a shot under your skin, into a muscle, or into a vein.

  • Injection routeA nurse or other health provider will give you this medicine.

  • Injection routeYou may be taught how to give your medicine at home. Make sure you understand all instructions before giving yourself an injection. Do not use more medicine or use it more often than your doctor tells you to.

  • Do not shake the medicine. Use each vial only 1 time. Throw away any medicine that is left in the vial after your dose. Do not use the medicine if it has changed color or has particles in it.

Desferal contraindications

  • This medicine is not right for everyone. Do not use it if you had an allergic reaction to deferoxamine, have severe kidney disease, or are not able to urinate.

Desferal warnings

  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have kidney problems, heart disease, thyroid problems, any type of infection, or a history of seizures. Tell your doctor if you are receiving dialysis treatment.

Serious Side Effects

  • Decrease in how much or how often you urinate

  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing

  • Chest pain, trouble breathing, blue lips, fingernails, or skin

  • Fast, pounding, or uneven heartbeat

  • Rapid weight gain. swelling in your face, hands, ankles, or feet

  • Unusual bleeding or bruising

  • Lightheadedness, dizziness, fainting

  • Unusual tiredness or weakness

  • Fever, chills, cough, sore throat, body aches

Less Serious Side Effects

  • Pain, itching, burning, swelling, or a lump under your skin where the needle is placed

  • Vision or hearing changes
