Desonide is a generic prescription drug. Desowen is the brand-name version of Desonide.
Desonide is a topical corticosteroid that is used to treat inflammation and itching caused by skin conditions, such as eczema, that respond to steroids. Desonide is a generic prescription drug that is meant to be used for just two weeks unless directed by your doctor. Contact your doctor immediately if you begin to develop a bacterial, viral, or fungal skin infection or if your condition does not improve in two weeks while using Desonide.
You should only use Desonide if it was prescribed for you and according to your doctor's dosage instructions to minimize adverse effects.
Before using Desonide, you should ensure you are not allergic to any of its ingredients. Do not use Desonide on a child unless prescribed by a doctor. You should also leave the treated area uncovered. If this medication was used in the diaper area, do not use plastic pants or tight-fitting diapers on the baby. Covering the treated area could cause your body to absorb too much of Desonide, which can cause unwanted side effects.
You should also let your doctor know about other medical conditions you may have, including diabetes or other skin problems or a reaction to other steroid medication, and if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
The most common side effects of Desonide include dry or itchy skin, stinging or burning to the treated area, and acne or stretch marks.
Serious side effects are rare and usually only occur after prolonged use of the drug. Serious side effects may include high blood sugar, cataracts, glaucoma, Cushing syndrome, and adrenal insufficiency.
You should contact your doctor immediately if you have any of these symptoms.
Be aware of possible signs of absorbing the medicine through your skin—weight gain, slow wound healing, thin/discolored skin, increased body hair, muscle weakness, nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, and changes in mood and menstrual cycle.
This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects or drug interactions. You can report negative side effects to the FDA.
