Dhea is a hormone that is naturally made by the body. These supplements are used by some people who believe they can improve sex drive, build muscle, fight the effects of aging, and improve some health conditions. But there isn't much evidence for many of these claims, and the supplements have some risks.
People also use Dhea supplements for slowing signs of aging, improving muscle strength and athletic performance, inability to become pregnant within a year of trying to conceive (infertility), and many other conditions, but there is no good scientific evidence to support these uses.
To avoid negative drug interaction, before taking Dhea be sure to tell your pharmacist about any other drugs that you may be taking. This includes over-the-counter as well as prescription drugs that you have had within the last two weeks. Your pharmacist or healthcare provider should also be informed about any medical conditions that you have or are currently receiving treatment for.
When taken orally, this supplement is usually safe to take once used appropriately. Dhea has been taken by mouth safely for up to two years, typically in doses of 50 mg daily.
Dhea may be unsafe when administered in high doses or if it is used over an extended period of time. You should not use Dhea in doses higher than 50-100 mg a day or for a long period of time. Using higher doses or using for a long time period can increase the chance of potentially serious side effects.
It should be noted that there are side effects that some people may experience that may not have been included here.
