Dilantin is a prescription drug that is used to treat certain types of seizures called tonic-clonic (grand mal), psychomotor (temporal lobe) seizures, and to prevent and treat seizures that happen during or after brain surgery. When you’re having a seizure, brain cells are forced to work much faster than usual. Dilantin helps to prevent brain cells from working as fast as a seizure requires them to. The cells are prevented from all firing together in an uncontrolled surge, so seizures can be stopped when they are just beginning.
Dilantin does not treat all types of seizures. It is best used for partial-onset seizures. It generally is not effective against generalized-onset absence seizures or infantile spasms.
Dilantin is not appropriate for you if you are allergic to phenytoin or its inactive ingredients or other anticonvulsants such as Cerebyx (fosphenytoin), or have had liver problems from taking phenytoin. Before you take Dilantin, review your medical conditions and history with your doctor, as well as any medications you take, including Rx and OTC medicines, vitamins, and supplements.
If you are pregnant, check with your doctor before taking Dilantin. Do not start or stop taking Dilantin during pregnancy unless your doctor advises you to do so. If you are taking Dilantin and become pregnant, tell your doctor right away. Dilantin can make hormonal birth control less effective. Talk to your doctor about effective birth control with a non-hormonal type of contraception while on Dilantin.
Do not stop taking Dilantin suddenly, even if you feel fine. Follow the dosing instructions provided by your doctor.
Wear medical ID at all times, which will notify responders of your condition in case of emergency. Brush and floss regularly, and visit the dentist regularly, as Dilantin can cause gum swelling.
Some common side effects of Dilantin may include headache, nausea, vomiting, constipation, dizziness, feeling of spinning, drowsiness, trouble sleeping, involuntary eye movements, blurred vision, rash, slurred speech, numbness, and tingling, or confusion.
Get emergency medical attention if you notice signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects or drug interactions. You can also report side effects to the FDA.
