Dimethyl Sulfoxide (also known as DMSO) is used to treat pain, swelling, and irritation caused by bladder or urinary conditions such as cystitis. This medication only treats the symptoms of this condition, it will not actually treat a bladder infection. Dimethyl Sulfoxide works by reducing inflammation in the bladder.
This FDA-approved medication is available in the form of an intravesical solution. This solution is placed into the bladder, usually through a tube known as a catheter device. The medication is kept in the bladder for at least 15 minutes or as directed by your doctor. After this period has a period, urinate to remove the drug from the bladder. This treatment is usually repeated every two weeks until you are fully relieved of your symptoms. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially if you have had cancer of the urinary tract.
Dimethyl Sulfoxide is not meant to be given in any other way such as an injection into a vein or muscle. Do not administer this medication into the bladder at the same time with other medications. Follow your doctor's instructions closely when using this medication to avoid serious side effects. Store this medication at room temperature and away from sunlight.
The most common side effects are bladder pain and discomfort. A garlic-like taste in the mouth may be noticed within minutes of placing this medication into the bladder. This taste may last for several hours, and an odor on the breath or skin may be noticeable for up to three days after use. Tell your doctor or healthcare professional if you experience any of these effects and they persist or worsen. Side effects can also be reported directly to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Serious allergic reactions to this medication are usually rare. However, you should seek immediate medical attention if you begin to experience symptoms of a serious allergic reaction such as itching, rash, swelling in your face or throat, severe dizziness, tightness in your chest, or trouble breathing. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.
