What is Diuril?

Diuril is a brand-name prescription drug that reduces water in the body in patients with high blood pressure (hypertension) or swelling (edema) due to congestive heart failure, kidney failure, liver failure, steroid therapy, or estrogen therapy.

Diuril is a “water pill,” or diuretic, that rids the body of excess water and salt. Diuril works by reducing the kidney's ability to reabsorb water or salt from the urine. For patients with high blood pressure, as the water content of the bloodstream goes down, blood pressure goes down. For patients with edema, a decrease in the body's water decreases swelling and bloating.

Diuril is prescribed by itself or with other antihypertensive drugs to treat high blood pressure. Diuril is taken as an oral suspension once per day.
