The typical cost of Wegovy without health insurance is $1,867.75 for four pre-filled pens, which equals a 28-day supply. How much does Wegovy cost with insurance?

Every specific insurance plan is unique and may or may not cover Wegovy. Generally, insurance can help reduce the out-of-pocket cost, but the exact cost of Wegovy with insurance coverage differs according to your plan. Contact your insurance company for prescription coverage and payment specifics. Alternatively, you may be able to use a SingleCare Wegovy savings card to get a lower cost of $1,225.00 for 4, 0.75ml prefilled 2.4mg/0.75ml pen pens. What is the generic of Wegovy?

Wegovy is a brand-name prescription drug manufactured by Novo Nordisk. The medication in Wegovy is semaglutide, which is the same active ingredient as brand-name Ozempic. Ozempic is indicated for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes, and Wegovy is prescribed for weight loss. There are no generic versions available at this time.

Can Wegovy be prescribed for weight loss?

Yes, Wegovy is specifically prescribed for weight loss in adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher (obese) or 27 or higher (overweight) with at least one weight-related condition such as hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, or dyslipidemia. It is intended for use as part of a treatment plan that includes a lower-calorie diet and increased physical activity. In one clinical trial, patients using Wegovy achieved an average weight loss of 14.9% of their initial body weight over 68 weeks. Obtaining a prescription for Wegovy requires a consultation with a healthcare provider who will evaluate if it's suitable based on your health needs and medical history.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Wegovy?

You may be wondering how to reduce the cost of Wegovy, especially if cost is a barrier. Other GLP-1 agonists are available, though none in generic form. Saxenda (liraglutide) is a weight-loss medication in the same drug class. While Wegovy is a once-weekly injection, Saxenda is a daily injection. Zepbound (tirzepatide) is a similar drug that is a once-weekly injection approved for weight loss. Healthcare providers may prescribe other GLP-1 agonists off-label for weight loss, such as Ozempic. However, insurance may not always cover the cost of these drugs if they are not prescribed according to their stated indication. There are currently no FDA-approved generic GLP-1 agonists available in the U.S.

Lifestyle interventions like changes in diet and increased physical activity are recommended along with any type of weight loss drug. There are less expensive oral medications that may be prescribed for weight loss, and each has its own set of indications and possible side effects. If you are interested in Wegovy alternatives, consult your healthcare provider to determine the appropriate medication for you.
