Doxycycline hyclate is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial and parasitic infections. Doxycycline hyclate belongs to a class of antibiotics called tetracyclines. Doxycycline hyclate is a generic drug also available under the trade names Doryx, Oracea, Monodox, Atridox, Morgidox, Vibra-Tabs, Alodox, Ocudox, Doxy, Acticlate, and Vibramycin. In the treatment of bacterial and parasitic infections, doxycycline hyclate use is common.

Uses
  • Treats infections. This medicine is a tetracycline antibiotic.
  • This medicine is not right for everyone. You should not receive it if you had an allergic reaction to doxycycline or any tetracycline antibiotic, or if you are pregnant.
Directions
  • Injection routeYour doctor will prescribe your dose and schedule. This medicine is given through a needle placed in a vein.

Warnings

  • This medicine can cause diarrhea. Call your doctor if the diarrhea becomes severe, does not stop, or is bloody. Do not take any medicine to stop diarrhea until you have talked to your doctor. Diarrhea can occur 2 months or more after you stop taking this medicine.
  • This medicine may make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Wear sunscreen. Do not use sunlamps or tanning beds.
Side effects
  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
  • Blistering, peeling, red skin rash
  • Severe diarrhea that may be bloody, stomach cramps, fever
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Mild diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite
Avoid
  • Some medicines can affect how doxycycline works. Tell your doctor if you are also using the following: PenicillinA blood thinner (such as warfarin)
  • This medicine can cause diarrhea. Call your doctor if the diarrhea becomes severe, does not stop, or is bloody. Do not take any medicine to stop diarrhea until you have talked to your doctor. Diarrhea can occur 2 months or more after you stop taking this medicine.
