It is also used as a filler for cosmetic purposes, treating flaws such as severe frown lines and lines between the eyebrows.
AbobotulinumtoxinA, the active ingredient found in Dysport, is made from the bacteria that causes botulism. Botulinum toxin blocks nerve activity in the muscles, causing a temporary reduction in muscle activity.
Before your doctor decides that Dysport treatment is right for you, he should know if you have Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS), myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome, a breathing disorder, trouble swallowing, facial muscle weakness, a change in the appearance of your face, seizures, bleeding problems, heart disease, diabetes, if you have had or will have surgery, or if you have ever received other botulinum toxin products such as Botox, Restylane, or Xeomin, or if you are using an allergy or cold medicine, antibiotic medicine, muscle relaxer, or sleep medicine.
It should be noted that the effects of this injectable drug are temporary. Your symptoms may return completely within 3 months after an injection. After repeat injections, it may take less and less time before your symptoms return, especially if your body develops antibodies to botulinum toxins.
Dysport should not be used if you are under 18 or over 65 years of age. It should also not be used if you are allergic to abobotulinumtoxinA or any of the active ingredients in this drug. A list of active ingredients can be found on the medication guide.
The most common side effects associated with the use of Dysport include nose and throat irritation, difficulty swallowing, injection site pain, injection site skin reaction, muscle pain and weakness, upper respiratory tract infection, breathing problems, droopy eyelids, sinus inflammation, double vision, loss of bladder control, and hoarseness.
This is not a complete list of side effects of Dysport that can occur. Speak to your doctor or healthcare provider for medical advice to ensure Dysport is right for you. Your doctor can also alert you on signs to look for if an allergic reaction, which can be life-threatening, occurs. You can also report additional serious side effects to the FDA.
