What is the brand name of Ertapenem?

Ertapenem is a generic prescription intravenous injection. It is the active ingredient in Invanz, the brand-name alternative manufactured by Merck.

What is Ertapenem?

Ertapenem is a prescription antibiotic IV injection that treats bacterial infections. It is approved to treat bacterial pneumonia, abdominal infections, skin infections, urinary tract infections, pelvic infections, and to prevent bacterial infections after surgery. Ertapenem is similar to penicillin in its mechanism of action. It kills bacteria by sticking to proteins on the bacteria which are vital to the bacteria's ability to form a cell wall. The bacterial cell wall degenerates and develops gaps and holes through which the contents of the bacteria spill out, killing the cell.

Ertapenem is given once as an intravenous infusion. The antibiotic will last from 7 to 14 days. The typical infusion takes about 30 minutes.

What are the side effects of Ertapenem?

The most common side effects of Ertapenem are temporary site reactions to the infusion. These include pain, irritation, redness, soreness, and a lump at the injection site. Other common side effects of Ertapenem are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, headache, upset stomach, vaginal discharge, and vaginal itching. Ertapenem may cause changes in mood or behavior. A rare but serious side effect of Ertapenem is seizures.

Ertapenem allergies are rare, but could be severe. This includes anaphylaxis, an allergic reaction to Ertapenem in which blood pressure drops rapidly. You will be monitored by a healthcare professional during the 30-minute infusion, but immediately consult a physician if you show signs of a Ertapenem allergic reaction, such as itching, rash, or trouble breathing.
