Eszopiclone is a generic medicine manufactured by various companies, such as Lupin and Aurobindo Pharma. The brand-name version of Eszopiclone is Lunesta.
Eszopiclone is a prescription drug used to treat insomnia in adults. It belongs to the sedative-hypnotic drug class and works by increasing the levels of a brain chemical called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). This slows your brain activity down to promote sleep.
Eszopiclone is available as oral tablets. The typical starting dosage is 1 mg right before bedtime on nights when you expect to have at least seven to eight hours of sleep. The maximum dosage of Eszopiclone is 3 mg daily.
The most common side effects of Eszopiclone are unpleasant taste, headache, sleepiness, respiratory infections, dizziness, dry mouth, rash, anxiety, hallucinations, and viral infections.
Eszopiclone has a boxed warning about the risk of complex sleep behaviors, such as sleep-walking or driving while asleep. Other serious side effects of Eszopiclone include severe allergic reactions, abnormal changes in thinking and behavior, worsening depression, and suicidal thoughts or behaviors.
There are also risks of withdrawal (bothersome symptoms that occur if you suddenly stop a drug), misuse, and addiction with Eszopiclone. Due to these risks, it’s important to take Eszopiclone exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Do not share Eszopiclone with anyone else and do not stop taking Eszopiclone without talking with a healthcare provider first.
This is not a comprehensive list of all side effects of Eszopiclone. For a complete list, talk to your healthcare provider. If you have side effects that are severely bothersome or won’t go away, consult a doctor for medical advice.
As a generic drug, Eszopiclone does not have any patient assistance programs that help lower its cost. There is a copay savings card available for the brand-name version, Lunesta. However, this card only works on brand-name Lunesta and will not apply to Eszopiclone.
