Zolpidem is a medication used to treat insomnia. It belongs to a class of drugs called sedative-hypnotics. Zolpidem works by increasing the effects of GABA, which slows activity in the brain and promotes sleep. It is a generic prescription drug that is only recommended for the short-term treatment of insomnia.  

Zolpidem is usually prescribed as an oral tablet taken before bedtime. The usual starting dosage is 5 mg before bedtime for women and 5 or 10 mg before bedtime for men. The maximum dosage of Zolpidem is 10 mg daily. It is recommended to have at least seven to eight hours of sleep remaining before the planned time of awakening. Taking Zolpidem with a meal may slow its effects. 

What are the side effects of Zolpidem?

The most common side effects of Zolpidem include drowsiness, dizziness, grogginess, and diarrhea. Other side effects may include dry mouth, back pain, palpitations, lightheadedness, abnormal dreams, and constipation. Consult a healthcare provider if side effects develop, persist, or worsen. 

Serious side effects of Zolpidem include complex sleep behaviors, such as sleepwalking or driving a car while asleep.
