What is the brand name of Etoposide?

Etoposide is a generic prescription drug manufactured by several companies, including Mylan Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Accord Healthcare Inc. The brand-name version of this drug is VePesid.

What is Etoposide?

Etoposide is an FDA-approved generic prescription medication used in combination with other medications to treat small cell lung cancer. This medication works by slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells in the body.

Etoposide comes in the form of an oral capsule. Your doctor will recommend an appropriate dose for you based on an assessment of your current medical condition, other drugs you are currently taking, and your response to treatment. Do not increase your dose or use this medication more often or for longer than prescribed. Your condition will not improve any faster, and your risk of side effects will increase. Before taking Etoposide, talk to your doctor about all of the medical conditions you have and all of the medications you take, including OTC and Rx drugs, vitamins, and supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, because Etoposide should not be used during pregnancy.

Avoid consuming grapefruit or grapefruit juice while using this medication unless approved to do so by your doctor. Grapefruit can affect the way that this medication works in your body. Take this medication with a full glass of water, and if possible, on an empty stomach. Your doctor will need to closely monitor your condition while you are taking this drug.

What are the side effects of Etoposide?

Possible side effects while using Etoposide may include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, or diarrhea. Your doctor may need to prescribe separate medication to prevent or relieve your nausea and vomiting. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any of these effects and they persist or worsen.

Temporary hair loss may occur while you are using this drug. Normal hair growth should return after your treatment is complete. You may also experience pain or sores in the mouth and throat. Brush your teeth carefully and gently.

Patients using this medication may experience serious side effects. However, your doctor has prescribed this drug because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Careful monitoring by your doctor may decrease your risk. Get emergency medical attention right away if you have symptoms of an allergic reaction such as hives, trouble breathing, or swelling around the face, lips, tongue or throat. If you have symptoms of a severe skin reaction including fever, sore throat, burning eyes, or a red or purple rash with blistering and peeling, get emergency medical help.

This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects or drug interactions.

What else should I know about Etoposide?

Etoposide can increase the risk of infection or bleeding. Notify your doctor if you have unusual bruising or bleeding, or signs of infection, like fever, sore throat, or difficulty breathing. Stay away from people who are sick or have an infection.

Avoid activities that can cause bleeding or injury, and be careful while shaving or brushing your teeth, to prevent bleeding. Do not get a live vaccine while taking Etoposide, such as the MMR vaccine. (The flu shot and COVID-19 shot are NOT live vaccines.)

Notify your doctor of any vision problems, seizures, appetite loss, stomach pain, fatigue, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes. You should also tell your doctor if you have signs of low red blood cells (fatigue, lightheadedness, shortness of breath, cold hands and feet) or low white blood cells (fever, mouth or skin sores, sore throat, cough).
