What is Femcap?

Femcap is a latex-free birth control device that is used as an alternative to the pill, condoms the patch, intrauterine devices (IUDs) and other barrier methods. Femcap does not contain any hormones and works by blocking the cervix so that sperm can not swim to the ovaries.

Femcap is inserted inside the vagina and covers the cervix prior to sexual activity. This device can be applied 15 minutes – 40 hours prior to intercourse. It must remain inserted for at least 6 hours after intercourse to ensure that sperm dies and can not penetrate the cervix during removal. Femcap must be removed 24 hours after intercourse.

Femcap is the only cervical cap that has been approved by the FDA. Femcap is made of soft, latex-free, medical-grade silicone rubber. Due to its unique design and soft composition, the woman cannot feel it at all, and the male partner rarely even notices that it is there.

What are the side effects of Femcap?

Clinical trials indicate that there are no known local or systemic side effects from the use of Femcap. In rare cases, some people may experience allergic reactions to the material Femcap is made of. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice signs of an allergic reaction; these signs may include rash, hives, itching, red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin with or without fever; wheezing; tightness in the chest or throat, trouble breathing, swallowing, or talking, or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat.
