What is Hycamtin used for?

Hycamtin is a prescription medication prescribed in the treatment of ovarian cancer, small cell lung cancer and certain types of cervical cancer. It works by interfering with the growth and spread of cancer cells and is usually given after other treatments have failed.

How to take Hycamtin

  • Injection routeYour doctor will prescribe your dose and schedule. This medicine is given through a needle placed in a vein. This medicine must be given slowly, so the needle will have to stay in place for at least 30 minutes.

  • Injection routeYou will receive this medicine while you are in a hospital or cancer treatment center. A nurse or other trained health professional will give you this medicine.

  • Some medicines can affect how topotecan works. Tell your doctor if you are using cyclosporine, elacridar, ketoconazole, ritonavir, saquinavir, or other medicines to treat breast cancer.

  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are breastfeeding or if you have kidney disease, blood or bone marrow problems, any type of infection, or a history of lung disease.

  • This medicine may make you bleed, bruise, or get infections more easily. Take precautions to prevent illness and injury. Wash your hands often.

  • This medicine can cause diarrhea. Call your doctor if the diarrhea becomes severe, does not stop, or is bloody. Do not take any medicine to stop diarrhea until you have talked to your doctor. Diarrhea can occur 2 months or more after you stop taking this medicine.
