What is Xeljanz XR?

Xeljanz XR is a brand-name extended-release drug used to treat moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis, a condition in which the body's immune system attacks healthy cells in the joints, causing swelling, stiffness, and pain. The active ingredient in Xeljanz XR, tofacitinib, interferes with the substances that signal the immune system to attack the body’s own cells. The result is a slowing down or suppression of the body’s immune response in order to decrease inflammation. Xeljanz XR can treat rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and ulcerative colitis. Xeljanz XR is prescribed to rheumatoid arthritis patients who have not responded to methotrexate, a less-expensive immune suppressant.

What are the side effects of Xeljanz XR?

Common side effects include upper respiratory tract infection, urinary tract infection, headache, diarrhea, fatigue, nausea, shortness of breath, and high blood pressure.

Xeljanz XR suppresses the immune system and lowers the body's ability to prevent or fight infections. Patients with risk factors like active infections, particularly tuberculosis, should not take Xeljanz XR unless approved by a prescribing physician. Immune suppression can increase the risk of infections and certain types of cancer, such as skin cancer or lymphoma in certain people.

Other serious side effects include blood clots and tears in the stomach or intestines.

Allergic reactions can be severe and present as skin rash, itching, swelling, or hives. Immediately discontinue using Xeljanz XR at the first sign of an allergic reaction.

This is not a complete list of adverse reactions. Consult with your prescribing doctor or pharmacist about other side effects, warnings, and precautions before starting treatment with Xeljanz XR.
