What is Inlyta used for?

Inlyta is a cancer medicine used to treat advanced kidney cancer. It comes in tablet form and works by interfering with the growth and spread of cancer cells. Common Inlyta side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and constipation.

How to take Inlyta

  • Take your medicine as directed. Your dose may need to be changed several times to find what works best for you. Take each dose at least 12 hours apart.

  • Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not break, crush, or chew it.

  • This medicine is not right for everyone. Do not use it if you had an allergic reaction to axitinib, or if you are pregnant.

  • Oral routeThis medicine may cause birth defects if either partner is using it during conception or pregnancy. Tell your doctor right away if you or your partner becomes pregnant. If you are a woman who can bear children, your doctor may give you a pregnancy test before you start using this medicine to make sure you are not pregnant. Use an effective form of birth control during treatment and for at least 1 week after the last dose. Male patients with female partners should use an effective form of birth control during treatment and for at least 1 week after the last dose.

  • Do not breastfeed during treatment and for at least 2 weeks after the last dose.

  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, thyroid problems, stomach or bowel bleeding, or a history of heart attack, heart failure, stroke, or blood clotting problems. Tell your doctor if you had a recent surgery.

  • This medicine may cause the following problems:High blood pressureBleeding problems or blood clotsHeart problems (including left ventricular ejection fraction, heart failure)Stomach or bowel problems (including perforation, fistula)Thyroid problemsReversible posterior leukoencephalopathy syndrome (RPLS)Liver problems

  • Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while you are using this medicine.

  • Your doctor will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.

Serious Side Effects

  • Seizures, headache, confusion, trouble seeing

  • Tiredness, feeling too hot or cold, hair loss, weight gain, or voice changes

  • Numbness or weakness on one side of your body, sudden or severe headache, pain in your calf, problems with vision, speech, or walking

  • Severe or ongoing stomach pain

  • Dark urine or pale stools, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, stomach pain, yellow skin or eyes, cloudy urine

  • Red or brown urine, bloody or black stools, vomiting blood

  • Unusual bleeding, bruising, or weakness

  • Swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet

  • Redness, pain, swelling, or blisters on the palms of your hands or soles of your feet

  • Fast, slow, or pounding heartbeat

  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing

  • Chest pain, trouble breathing, coughing up blood

Less Serious Side Effects

  • Sores or white patches on your lips, mouth, or throat

  • Constipation, diarrhea, decreased appetite, weight loss

  • Muscle pain
