Isentress Hd is a brand-name prescription drug used to control and reduce the virus that causes HIV/AIDS, called human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV, for short. This virus is very primitive and so is called a “retrovirus.” The active ingredient in Isentress Hd, raltegravir, belongs to a class of drugs called antiretroviral drugs.
To understand how Isentress Hd works, HIV carries its genetic information in RNA, a more primitive form of DNA. Before it can make copies of itself, the RNA has to be translated into DNA. Isentress Hd blocks the protein that makes that translation happen so HIV particles are unable to create new viruses.
Because the HIV virus attacks and weakens the immune system, reducing the amount of HIV virus in the body strengthens the immune system, giving it the ability to fight off the infections and cancers characteristic of the disease.
