This virus is very primitive and so is called a “retrovirus.” The active ingredient in Isentress Hd, raltegravir, belongs to a class of drugs called antiretroviral drugs.
To understand how Isentress Hd works, HIV carries its genetic information in RNA, a more primitive form of DNA. Before it can make copies of itself, the RNA has to be translated into DNA. Isentress Hd blocks the protein that makes that translation happen so HIV particles are unable to create new viruses.
