Lacosamide has risen in popularity, first under the brand name Vimpat and now as a generic. It can be used to treat multiple types of seizures. Lacosamide is produced as a generic drug in both its immediate-release tablet and oral solution forms. This fact has helped make it an affordable option for patients without insurance, both children and adults. The extended-release version is only available as Motpoly XR, which offers the convenience of once-daily dosing at a higher price point.
The standard out-of-pocket cost of Lacosamide without health insurance is $1,065.26 per 60, 100mg tablets though you can save using a SingleCare Lacosamide coupon to pay only $24.21 for 60, 100mg tablets of Lacosamide. If you don’t have access to an insurance plan, you can still use SingleCare for free Lacosamide savings. Presenting a SingleCare prescription coupon or your SingleCare savings card to your pharmacist can be a more reliable way to save compared to pharmaceutical manufacturer patient assistance programs, which have eligibility restrictions.
Each insurance formulary is different and may or may not cover Lacosamide. Insurance companies typically encourage generic drug use based on their lower price, which means generic Lacosamide may be more likely to be on the plan’s formulary than brand-name Vimpat.
Even if Lacosamide is listed on the formulary, there will likely be some out-of-pocket expense. The cost of Lacosamide with insurance coverage varies depending on your plan - check with your insurance provider for specific drug coverage and copay details.
If your insurance does not cover Lacosamide, you can use SingleCare to get discounts on Lacosamide at your participating pharmacy. The coupons are accepted at over 35,000 pharmacies across the United States. Additionally, you can also use SingleCare coupons if you have Medicare or Medicaid. If Medicare or Medicaid don’t cover your Lacosamide prescription, you can use SingleCare instead. Go to the SingleCare website or app to compare the lowest price of Lacosamide with SingleCare versus your copay with insurance or Medicare.
Lacosamide costs with Medicare will vary by plan, prescription, and coverage stage. Because of its lower price, a prescription for generic Lacosamide is more likely to be covered than a branded Vimpat prescription or one for the branded, extended-release capsule MotPoly XR. Refer to your plan’s drug formulary to find out whether your Medicare Part D or Medicare Advantage plan covers Lacosamide and how much the copay or coinsurance is.
If Lacosamide is not covered by Medicare or if you have not met your plan’s deductible, you may have to pay the full price of $1,065.26 for 60, 100mg tablets. Being in the donut hole of Medicare drug coverage can also mean a higher out-of-pocket expense. In any of these cases, using a SingleCare coupon for Lacosamide could save you more money than Medicare. Our lowest price for Lacosamide is currently $24.21 for 60, 100mg tablets.
Lacosamide is a generic drug made by Camber Pharmaceuticals. The brand name version of Lacosamide is Vimpat and is more expensive than the price of Lacosamide, which is $1,065.26 per 60, 100mg tablets, but uses the same active ingredients as Lacosamide. In addition, Motpoly XR is an extended-release capsule containing Lacosamide and is only available as a brand-name product. Use a SingleCare prescription drug discount card to pay $24.21 for 60, 100mg tablets.
Lacosamide is an anticonvulsant drug used for treating different forms of epilepsy. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Lacosamide for the treatment of focal onset seizures, also known as partial seizures. It can be used alone or with other antiepileptics for this type of convulsion. Another approved use of the drug is for adjunctive treatment of primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures, in which it is used alongside other anticonvulsants. These FDA indications extend from children to adults.
The most common side effects of Lacosamide are dizziness, headache, nausea, and fatigue. About 30% of Lacosamide users overall experience dizziness, making it the most frequent adverse reaction. Dizziness can be more problematic for people who are at risk of falling, including the elderly.
Serious side effects can occur as well. Most importantly, there is a warning about the risk of heart arrhythmia and problems with the electrical conduction system of the heart. Another warning makes note of an increase in suicidal thoughts in those taking antiepileptic drugs.
Considering the serious adverse effects of Lacosamide, it makes sense that those with significant heart disease, heart rhythm problems, or mental health problems may need to avoid the drug or proceed with great caution. For those with kidney or liver disease, adjustments to the dosing are typically needed. The medical advice of your doctor will be needed to make the decision on if and how to use Lacosamide in the setting of different underlying health conditions.
Interactions with other prescription medications, drugs, and over-the-counter remedies are another concern and could mean avoidance of Lacosamide. Any medication that causes drowsiness could have an additive effect in this manner with Lacosamide. That means drug classes like opioids for pain, sedatives for insomnia, antihistamines, anxiety medications, alcohol, cannabinoids, and other anticonvulsants could be more hazardous. Likewise, drugs that affect the cardiac conduction symptoms, such as antiarrhythmics, beta blockers, and calcium channel blockers, require healthcare provider input before taking along with Lacosamide.
