What is Lithostat?

Lithostat is a brand-name prescription drug used to prevent kidney stones in patients with urinary tract infections caused by urea-splitting bacteria. These bacteria break down urea in the urine into ammonia, carbonate, and bicarbonate, all of which are alkalis. When the urine becomes too alkaline, this puts patients at risk of developing painful calcium-phosphate crystals called struvite stones, a common problem in people vulnerable to urinary tract infections.

The active ingredient in Lithostat, acetohydroxamic acid, is not an antibiotic and neither kills nor stops the growth of the infection. Instead, it blocks a protein used by the bacteria to break down urea and so prevents the urine from becoming too alkaline.

Lithostat is used along with antibiotics and surgery.

What are the side effects of Lithostat?

The most common side effects of Lithostat are mild headache, skin rash, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, anemia, shivering, and “feeling bad” (malaise), but this is not a complete list.

Mental and mood changes include depression and nervousness.

Allergic reactions are possible and may be characterized by an immediate rash. Consult a physician immediately if you experience a Lithostat allergic reaction.
