What is Lynparza?
Lynparza is a brand-name prescription drug used to treat cancer of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and peritoneum, the layer of tissue that covers the abdomen. Lynparza is also prescribed to treat the most common form of breast cancer, HER2 negative breast cancer, that has spread to other parts of the body.
Lynparza is used as maintenance chemotherapy to treat epithelial (outer layer) ovarian cancer, as well as cancer of the fallopian tubes and peritoneum. A maintenance therapy program follows a first-line therapy that has managed to rid the body of most of the cancer. Lynparza is intended to keep cancer from recurring. Lynparza is also prescribed to patients with advanced ovarian cancer if at least three drug therapies have not rid the body of cancer.
Lynparza is used as chemotherapy for HER2 negative breast cancer that has spread to the rest of the body and already been treated by previous chemotherapy. Four out of five diagnosed breast cancers are HER2 negative breast cancers.
The active ingredient in Lynparza, olaparib, works by blocking the cancer cell's ability to use their genetic material to carry out necessary cellular functions or to divide into new cancer cells. Lynparza is taken as a tablet.
