What is Metamucil: Uses, Warnings & Interactions

Updated May 14, 2025  •  Published Dec 30, 2020

Metamucil is a family of dietary fiber products. All Metamucil products contain some form of soluble fiber, and some products also contain other nutritional supplements such as vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, and probiotics. Most Metamucil products contain the soluble fiber psyllium, but not all of them. Some Metamucil products contain soluble corn fiber instead. Besides other health benefits, psyllium promotes regularity by keeping water in stools, making them softer and easier to pass. There is evidence that psyllium supplements can help lower cholesterol, reduce blood pressure, or control appetite.
